One state, seven retailers, 22,500 volunteers, and 246 tons of litter. No, it’s not math homework. It’s Green Up Day 2020, a 50-year Vermont tradition.
Green Up Day, led by Green Up Vermont, is “a yearly statewide event when thousands of volunteers get involved in a community-wide spring cleanup of roadside litter,” said Jim Desper, market development analyst at Subaru of New England.
How much roadside is cleaned? This year it was 13,000 miles.
“It is the largest statewide volunteer event in Vermont with over 22,500 taking part,” Desper adds, “and the longest-running statewide Green Up Day in the United States.”
Subaru of New England has sponsored Green Up Day for the last 10 years, and this year all seven Vermont Subaru retailers participated as bag pick up and trash drop-off locations.

Each retailer also formed a crew to help with the cleanup work. Teams included employees, plus family and friends.
Nearly 250 tons of litter were collected statewide. At White River Subaru 1.5 tons of waste were dropped off, including two refrigerators, two televisions, and four tires.
