What started as a small-scale retailer garden has grown to more than 5,000 square feet in the last six years. It also welcomed new friends this spring—six laying hens with their own Suba-Coop.

The garden, started in 2015 at Montgomery Subaru in Montgomery, AL, was the idea of Karen Danielson, parts manager. It’s tended by the parts and detail departments, and the bounty has included tomatoes, cabbage, pumpkins, cantaloupe, eggplant, and much more. The produce is shared with employees, customers, and a local food bank.

In addition to their dealership duties in marketing and maintenance, Megan Danielson Campbell and Lester Raynes care for the hens. The eggs are shared along with the produce.

Campbell says a picnic bench was recently added in the garden, and many employees prefer to eat lunch there rather than in the break room.

Customers are often given tours of the garden, and the retailer shares about the garden’s yields and the new hens on social media.
