From cars to baseball cards to figurines, it’s human nature to collect things. Nathan Hudson, new car sales manager at Landers McLarty Subaru, has an interesting collection: plastic bags.
That’s right, Hudson asks customers to bring their plastic grocery bags to Landers McLarty Subaru. He collects the bags and delivers them to a local sewing circle. Members of the circle, including Hudson’s mother, Rebecca “Becky” Hudson, clean and cut the bags, transforming them into plastic yarn. The yarn is used to crochet sleeping mats for the homeless.

Nathan Hudson says it takes more than 500 bags to make one 6’ x 3’ mat. So far, the group has made over 500 mats.
“Most have gone to local homeless shelters in the Birmingham, Decatur, Cullman, and Huntsville areas,” Nathan Hudson reports. “They have also sent them as far away as Nicaragua.”
Some Lander’s McLarty customers set up their own collection points, gathering bags at churches, schools, and from family members.
